Description
Some hidden and some obvious symbolism was used in the American novel, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne....one which is the wild rose. In his first chapter he describes the "the black flower of civilized society" which is the prison and the prison represents the crime and punishment coming from the early Puritan life. In this chapter he mentions how the weeds which grew around the prison symbolize how corrupt civilization really is. The wild rose being the positive symbol used represents the blossoming of good out of the darknessf of all civilized life.
In the language of flowers the wild rose also stands for both pleasure and pain.
